"Massage Therapist" refers to an individual, whether male or female who has made an extensive effort to acquire education, experience and licensing at various levels—locally statewide and sometimes even nationally or internationally. These professionals typically complete a minimum of 800 -1400 hours of hands on bodywork (massage) at a school accredited by the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals. This accreditation is widely recognized as setting the industry standards, for massage. In addition to their training massage therapists actively engage in continuous education to stay updated on the latest modalities and therapeutic techniques.
On the other hand a "Masseuse" typically lacks training in massage therapy and often works in unlicensed establishments that may engage in illegal activities such, as forced sex trafficking. Unlike licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs) these unregulated individuals do not operate under any city or state government agency oversight. Unfortunately it is these "Masseuses" and human trafficking victims who contribute to perceptions of the massage industry by engaging in prostitution or incorporating elements into what should be strictly therapeutic massages. This behavior damages the reputation and respect earned by Massage Therapists who're highly educated and dedicated professionals striving to improve peoples lives by alleviating chronic pain and addressing life altering injuries.
